about

Makrokosma Bali, co-composed by Wayne Vitale (US) and I Made Arnawa (Bali), combines and contrasts the music, living culture, and ancient Hindu cosmology of Bali with modern conceptions of the universe.

Makrokosma Bali was performed by the twenty-five musicians of Sekaa Gong Taruna Mekar, the famed gamelan ensemble of Tunjuk, Bali, under the direction of I Made Arnawa. This recording features a selection of music from the fully staged work, premiered at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco on May 13-15, 2011, as part of the exhibition "Bali: Art, Ritual, Performance." The staged piece combined new music for gamelan orchestra with projected video and still imagery, ambient sounds, and lighting design in an integrated set, realized by a team of US-based visual, audio, and software artists.
